Hardly anyone will argue the state of Mississippi serves some of the best Southern dishes in the South. We’re venturing to Mississippi State University to highlight the best places to eat in every SEC town for our next tailgate series. Here are the best restaurants in Starkville, MS.
The Little Dooey – 100 Fellowship St., Starkville
The place serves up some of the classic dishes Mississippi is known for, such as Catfish, BBQ, and smoked meats. Like their food, the story is excellent too. Margaret Ann and Barry Wood started serving food from a local gas station until they moved to bigger digs in 1985. Interestingly, “Little Dooey” means “fun gathering,” and that’s what you’ll get with your food. Make sure you try a po’boy.
Harvey’s – 406 Highway 12, Starkville
It’s a steakhouse, so there is plenty of meat here. Harvey’s is a small chain with three locations. Some folks who dine there go back the next day if they’re still in town. Lot’s of tasty items on the menu, but it’s a steakhouse and I recommend you go with a filet-cooked medium-rare. Ton’s of side dishes and broccoli bites come recommended. It’s one of the best restaurants in Starkville, MS.

Oby’s – 504 Academy Road, Starkville
Cajun describes Oby’s to a tee. It should be a go-to place when the Louisiana crowd is in town. This place attracts locals and students alike, and once again, the po’boy creole roast beef is a hit. Fans order the jambalaya and the strawberry-pecan salad with frequency.
City Bagel Café – 511 University Drive, Starkville
Close to the university and known for their service and the food. As the name implies, there are 15 varieties of bagels. Breakfast dishes and sandwiches are popular with students and football fans.
Commodore Bob’s Yacht Club – Rue du Grand Fromage, Starkville
Don’t let the name fool you because it has nothing to do with Vanderbilt. A relatively new restaurant, its garnered rave reviews from several publications. It’s a popular place for cocktails and to meet before and after MSU events.
The Biscuit Shop – 104 South Washington St., Starkville
Family recipes make a visit to this place worthwhile. Biscuit and cake recipes change daily, so you might now find the favor you liked from a previous visit. For example, the Tuesday menu consists of blueberry, strawberry, blackberry, cinnamon sugar, and cheddar-flavored biscuits. For Wednesday, it’s lemon and “sammiches.” Raspberry peach on Thursday, chocolate chip on Friday, and maple bacon on Saturday round out the week.

The Veranda – 208 Lincoln Green, Starkville
This spot is one of Starkville’s most award-winning eateries. Customers can order fresh seafood daily, and steaks are also a best seller. Frank Jones and Jay Yates thought Starkville could benefit from a more “progressive” restaurant and opened their doors in 2003. Don’t overlook the fried-chicken and Southern sides like collard greens, cornbread, and mashed potatoes and gravy. A top-tier wine list makes The Veranda a popular eatery.
Restaurant Tyler – 100 E Main, Starkville
Ty Thames and Brian Kelley own other Starkville restaurants like Bin 612 and The Guest Room. Known for their farm-to-table dishes, Southern Living and Mississippi Magazine have written feature articles. The duck-wrapped bacon appetizer and smoked catfish are big hits. Don’t forget the hushpuppies, either.
