Berry got his start on the bar circuit in and around Athens, Georgia. After building a loyal following and producing several of his own independent albums, he signed his first Nashville record deal in 1992. A year later, he released his self-titled album.
John endured the first of three major health scares in the mid-90s. At the height of his climb, a brain operation, followed by surgery on his vocal cords, paused his touring and recording schedule. The break also gave him time to reflect on his life. The singer-songwriter had achieved a good deal of success in a few short years. Yet there was a part of himself he didn’t like.
“Lots of times, I wasn’t a nice person,” Berry admitted during our interview. “I could be difficult to be around, and I didn’t care for that John.”
