Canadian Cory Marks excelled at playing hockey and won a spot on the Royal Military College team. If he wasn’t going to make it as a pro hockey player, his backup plan was to fly fighter jets. Now he flys high as a successful songwriter and performer.

Cory grew up listening to everything from heavy metal to outlaw country music. Both genres can be heard in his own brand of Americana. His music education began at ten when he started on the drums. Cory was 17 when he started playing the guitar. He played music during his college years, but only for himself. While hanging out at a local bar with his teammates, Cory sang a few songs with the band, including two originals. He’s been writing and singing ever since.
To his credit, Cory connected with award-winning producer Kevin Churko, whose Las Vegas studio has a history of turning out hits. “Outlaws & Outsiders” was the first single in the Who I Am album, released in 2019. Cory penned the song from inspiration gained touring with Aaron Pritchett, and the lyrics ring true for the Canadian. “I want to bring a unique sound to country music,” explained Cory.

A full season of touring was planned for 2020. However, the COVID pandemic brought the live music world to a sudden halt. Like every artist, Cory missed the road and is eager to perform. “We’ve been performing on our social media platforms, but it isn’t the same,” noted Cory. “I enjoy playing for my fans, but sitting in my room in front of a camera isn’t the same as standing on the stage. It’s one thing to hear a crowd. It’s another to feel the energy. That’s what I miss.”
Who I Am, his debut album, is available now on streaming services. Listen to our conversation as we discuss everything from his musical influences to his love for flying and touring.
