Levi Lowrey is a singer-songwriter based in Dacula, Georgia. His hit song, “Colder Weather,” was a chart-topping success for the Zac Brown Band.
In collaboration with fellow songwriter Wyatt Durrette, Levi forms the duo “Yesterday’s Wine,” and together they continue to produce incredible music.
I had the opportunity to catch up with Levi during the 16th annual 30A Songwriters Festival. Along with his wife, Stephanie, they discussed Levi’s writing and production schedule. Levi has been open about his struggles with mental health issues and how they affect both his professional and family life.

Levi came to the forefront of the music world when he and Durrette penned “Colder Weather.” Born and raised in Harbin, GA, Lowrey began writing poems and short stories in the fifth grade. He also adopted the fiddle a couple of years later, which led to playing guitar.

In his mid teens Levi began writing songs, to which he admits, “They weren’t worth a damn.” He stuck to writing, both through his poems and songs. Joining us for this episode was Grant Walden, the owner of HearTell Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Grant also edits this podcast.
Grant asked Levi what motivated him to create and write. “To me it’s about giving yourself permission,” Levi said when describing his creative process. About the time he graduated high school, Levi saw Butch Walker in the Cotton Club in Atlanta. “Three songs in I’m doing that for the rest of my life,” said Levi, describing how he wanted to perform. “The connection Butch had with his audience was incredible.”
A few years later Levi Lowrey found himself on tour with Zac Brown. Today, his successful and on-going career takes him to venues and songwriting festivals throughout the country.
Levi remains committed to highlighting his struggles with mental health issues. “I know that I don’t deserve or belong in any situation where I’m applauded praised,” Levi admitted. “We’re all just flawed people.”
