David Dunavent grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi, along the banks of the Mississippi River, and in the heart of “Blues Country.” Not only is David an accomplished singer-songwriter who tours extensively across the Southeastern U.S., he also has an incredible knowledge of Blues history.

I met David through a mutual friend, and fellow singer-songwriter, Trevor Finlay, between their performances at Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar in Santa Rosa Beach, FL. Within minutes we bonded and agreed upon a time to record a podcast episode. David’s musical and vocal talent is evident after hearing him play only a few bars of any song, whether a cover or an original.
What I didn’t realize until we sat down in the podcast studio at SOWAL House in Rosemary Beach, FL, was his extensive knowledge of the Blues and the many Delta musicians who created such soulful sounds.
Dunavent began his performing career at the tender age of three, after securing a role in the ABC miniseries, “Elvis, The Early Years.” Coming from a musical family didn’t hurt either, nor did voice and piano lessons from local Clarksdale ladies. Although the piano lessons didn’t hold his interest, receiving his first guitar at 11 did the trick. Today David owns several dozen guitars.
During his high school years he formed the band, Curfew. Because they were underage, the boys had to ask their parents permission to stay out past their usual curfew hours.
The striving artist studied music at a local community college, but that didn’t make him the musician he is today. “I may not understand music theory as well as some, but I know what sounds good and where to find the right sound on a guitars neck,” stated Dunavent.
